Sarojini Naidu


The second woman President of the Indian National Congress and first Indian woman to preside over the INC conference .

Sarojini Naidu was a poet and an independence activist. She was the first lady to become a governor of a province and of a state in independent India.

  • 1879 - Sarojini Naidu was born on February 13 in Hyderabad, India, to Aghornath Chattopadhyay and Barada Sundari Devi.
  • 1895 - Married Dr. Govindarajulu Naidu, a non-Brahmin South Indian.
  • 1905 - Became actively involved in the Indian independence movement, and was a follower of Mahatma Gandhi.
  • 1915 - elected as the President of the Indian National Congress, becoming the first Indian woman to hold this position.
  • 1925 - Appointed as the Governor of the United Provinces, becoming the first woman to hold the position of governor in India.
  • 1930 - Participated in the Salt Satyagraha, a non-violent protest against the British salt tax.
  • 1942 - Sarojini Naidu was arrested during the Quit India movement, which aimed at forcing the British to leave India.
  • 1947 - India gained independence from British rule, and Sarojini Naidu was appointed as the Governor of the newly-formed state of Uttar Pradesh.
  • 1949 - Died on March 2 in Lucknow, India, at the age of 70.


Throughout her life, Sarojini Naidu was known for her eloquent speeches and poetry, and was affectionately referred to as the "Nightingale of India." She played a significant role in India's struggle for independence and was a trailblazer for women in Indian politics.
